About Footsteps of La Crosse

Footsteps of La Crosse is brought to you by the La Crosse Public Library (LPL) Archives & Local History Department. This project was initially funded by the Wisconsin Historical Society as part of a “lasting tools” component of a partnership between the Wisconsin Historical Society and PBS WI. This affiliation resulted in the production of Wisconsin Hometown Stories – La Crosse feature documentary which premiered in May 2008.

  • Historical photographs in this architectural walking tour are courtesy of the LPL Archives, La Crosse County Historical Society, UWL Murphy Library Special Collections and Area Research Center, and Dr. Les Crocker.
  • Present day photographs are courtesy of Anita Taylor Doering.
  • New 2024 maps and Footsteps branding designed by Gareth Baldrica-Franklin.
  • Original research and historic narratives were provided by Eric J. Wheeler, independent architectural historian, but are monitored, reviewed, and modified by LPL Archives staff. Some additional tours have been included from contributors like Dr. Leslie F. Crocker, LPL Archives staff, and UWL Public & Policy History students.
  • Voices of La Crosse tours were created in partnership with Hear, Here La Crosse.
  • This website is maintained by LPL Archives staff.

Other agencies involved in this venture were the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center and the UWL Department of History.
